There are many things that you need to take care of in your life–one of those is your toothbrush. It keeps your mouth clean and healthy, and it needs some care and attention.

First, be aware that toothbrushes only last for 3-4 months, no matter what. After 3-4 months of use, they are less effective and need to be replaced. They need to be replaced sooner if they appear worn or frayed, or if they become contaminated. When buying a toothbrush, choose a toothbrush with the ADA Seal of Acceptance, if at all possible.

Second, be aware that a contaminated toothbrush is a useless toothbrush. There are many ways to contaminate a toothbrush; here are some things to remember as you try to keep it clean. Ideally, store your toothbrush in open air. Closed spaces exaggerate bacterial reproduction rates. Those bacteria live on your toothbrush, and then end up in your mouth. Open air discourages speedy bacterial growth. Don’t store your toothbrush around other toothbrushes if you can. If you must store it near other brushes, make sure the heads don’t touch at all. If the toothbrush heads touch, it can spread bacteria in a process called cross-contamination. This is damaging to your toothbrush and should be avoided.

Third, make sure to support your tooth brushing effort by scheduling regular dental appointments!
