Fluoride treatments are a commonplace practice for children, but many older patients do not receive the level of fluoride that their teeth need. It is important to ingest fluoride or receive fluoride treatment regularly to help your tooth enamel repel bacteria and cavities.

Tooth enamel is your smile’s first line of defense against dental problems. Despite its smooth appearance, enamel is comprised of mineral crystals that are lost and regained every day. The bacteria in your smile and the sugar from food produce acids that weaken the crystals, but the calcium and phosphate in your saliva, along with fluoride, replenish lost minerals.

Children, in particular, need fluoride to aid their developing bodies, but you also need fluoride throughout the course of your life, especially if the use of medication or the presence of gum recession has put you at a higher risk for tooth decay and gum disease. Receiving dental restorations such as crowns, bridges, fillings, or braces can also result in the need for more fluoride.

If you live in a city with fluoridated water or use a toothpaste with fluoride, your smile is probably receiving the right amount that it needs. Dr. Debra Craig can tell if you need more fluoride and would be happy to provide fluoride treatment or a supplement.
